Grande Prairie Bioreactor Landfill
Client: Aquatera Utilities Inc.
UMA was retained by Aquatera Utilities Inc. to design and provide project management services for Cell 6 of the Grande Prairie Landfill. The landfill serves a community of approximately 45,000 people.
The new landfill cell was designed as a bioreactor cell and the design incorporated an engineered clay liner overlaid by a synthetic prefabricated bituminous geomembrane (PBGM) liner. An automated leachate collection and recirculation system was designed and installed in partnership with Alberta Research Council.
The Grande Prairie landfill was the first landfill in Alberta to use Colletanche PBGM and the first to use a designed bioreactor cell.
UMA provided design, construction management, quality assurance/quality control and contract administration services for the facility.
