Horizon Oil Sands Project - Water Supply and Water System
Client: Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL)
UMA Engineering Ltd. is providing engineering design, procurement and construction management resources support for the river water supply, raw water, and recycle water system for Horizon Oil Sands Project. The site is located approximately 75 km northwest of Fort McMurray, Alberta, adjacent to the Athabasca River.
The Horizon Project will be implemented in a phased approach between 2005 and 2012, leading to the production of 232,000 barrels per day of synthetic crude oil. The project will use open pit mining methods to extract an estimated six billion barrels of recoverable crude oil. All of the upgrading facilities are located on the Horizon plant site to allow energy integration and sharing of common infrastructure.
UMA has been involved in the design basis memorandum (DBM); engineering design specifications (EDS); detailed design (DD); regulatory approvals, coordination of hydraulic model studies for the river intake; dam safety reviews for the raw water and recycle storage ponds, and procurement contracts for major equipment and construction work packages and construction management resources support for the following facilities:
- River Water Intake and Pump Station: a 24 m wide intake wall that includes six intake ports complete with fish screens. The intake is located in-bank on the west side of the Athabasca River. The pump station includes three vertical turbine pumps with an
8500 m3 per hour capacity.
- River Water Pipeline: 42 inch diameter, 6.5 km long with an 8,500 m3 per hour capacity.
- Raw Water Pipeline: 36 inch diameter, 1.5 km long with an 8,500 m3 per hour capacity.
- Utility Corridor Access Road: 6 km, 9 m wide from the River Water Intake to the plant site, designed for highway loading capacity.
- Raw Water Pond and Raw/Firewater Pump Station System: a 1 sq. km, 2 million m3 pond live storage capacity, 8500 m3 per hour pumping system capacity.
- Recycle Water Pond and Pump Station System: a 1000 X 300 m pond with a storage capacity of 500,000 m3; 14,000 m3 per hour pumping capacity.
- Temporary Water System: 5000 m3 per day supply during construction.
- Emergency Sewage Dump Pond: 300,000 m3 capacity.
