Deerfoot Trail Extension
Client: Alberta Infrastructure & Transportation
Traffic flows a little easier in south Calgary now thanks to the extension of the city's busy Deerfoot Trail. The Deerfoot Trail is part of the Canamex Highway, a trade route linking Western Canada with the United States and Mexico. The $100 million 12 kilometre extension of the Deerfoot Trail was part of Alberta Transportation's strategy to upgrade and extend the entire trade corridor within Alberta. It opened to traffic in November 2003.
The extension, connecting the Deerfoot Trail to Highway 2 south, now draws most of the long distance trucks away from MacLeod Trail and Highway 22X, the previous route. It is a four-lane divided roadway, with provision to increase to six lanes, and also includes truck-climbing lanes in each direction.
UMA worked on the design, oversaw construction, and led the joint venture team for the project. Construction began in fall 2000 and the three-year construction period involved seven contracts.
UMA adopted a "just-in-time" philosophy for the project and kept the project on schedule. Our team helped deliver the overall project approximately $8 million under the Alberta Transportation's original budget. We achieved this through a value engineering program, economical designs and effective project management.
