Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant
Client: Cities of Moose Jaw and Regina, Saskatchewan

The Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant, jointly owned by the cities of Moose Jaw and Regina, Saskatchewan, has been in operation since 1955. The plant supplies treated water to Regina and Moose Jaw and the surrounding region.
UMA provided consulting and engineering services an expansion project to twin the existing plant raw water system, thus expanding the plant's capacity to more than 200 million litres per day. A second raw water pipeline was installed to operate in parallel with the existing pipeline.
Our team also assessed and upgraded the granular activated carbon transfer pumping facilities, and replaced the original intake traveling screen.
As part of the intake design, UMA developed a real time lake sampling and monitoring system to assess water quality in Buffalo Pound Lake. The findings of the monitoring program resulted in a shortening of the intake conduit, giving significant savings in construction costs to the Owner.
The project culminated with the twinning of the lake intake, which involved construction of an earthen cofferdam and dewatering system.
In 2002, this project received an Award of Excellence in Infrastructure from the Consulting Engineers of Saskatchewan.
