Buller Building HVAC and electrical upgrades
Client: University of Manitoba
The Buller building is five storey, 88,000 sq. ft. laboratory and teaching facility on the Fort Garry campus of the University of Manitoba. Originally constructed in 1933, the Buller building required a complete replacement of the heating, ventilating, cooling and electrical systems.
UMA provided preliminary design, detailed design and contract administration services. From the outset, the University stipulated that the facility remain operating throughout construction. This was achieved by designing systems that could be installed in phases over three consecutive summer construction seasons.
The Buller building project presented the following challenges:
- Designing systems that could be installed and utilized in phases to match the construction schedule
- Designing new systems while maintaining the heritage characteristics of the building
- Providing prompt contract administration services during the summer construction schedule
