Community Involvement

With an almost 100-year history in Canada, UMA's people are passionate about the communities we live and work in. We are actively involved in numerous professional associations, non-profit organizations and volunteer activities to enhance our communities, at home and around the world.

At a corporate level:

  • UMA sponsors 13 scholarships to encourage young people to pursue careers in engineering-related fields.
  • UMA has supported the United Way since 1960. The firm matches all employee donations at 50%. Our 2007 campaign raised more than $99,000 – our highest total ever!
  • In December 2007, UMA redirected $10,000 budgeted for holiday cards to charity, donating the amount to the Canadian Association of Food Banks.
  • In 2008, UMA donated $100,000 to charities across Canada. The firm asked its employees to help select the charitable organizations that would best benefit from this contribution. This initiative reflects UMA's commitment to give back to the communities we serve.

The following are just a few examples of our participation at a regional level:

  • UMA Calgary participated in the 2008 Canstruction competition, contributing more than 1,150 cans of food to the Interfaith Food Bank.
  • UMA’s Regina office supports the Kid Sport Corporate Challenge which raises money to give under-privileged children the opportunity to play organized sports.
  • Our Winnipeg office is a major supporter of Canadian Blood Services' Partners for Life donation program and received an "Outstanding Achievement" award in 2006 for their efforts.
  • UMA Calgary contributed to the Parkdale Playground Renewal, donating volunteer hours and a train structure (pictured above) to the transportation-themed playground for children aged 2 to 12.

  • UMA's Burnaby office was recognized with a Community Spirit Award for its support of the 2007 United Way Campaign in the Lower Mainland.
